Spirituality and the Spirit of God are not the same.
One is rooted in human feeling, intuition, and self elevation.
The other is rooted in the sovereign will of YHWH, revealed through His Word, fulfilled in Yeshua HaMashiach, and applied by the Ruach HaKodesh, the Holy Spirit.
Spirituality often imitates the supernatural, but it rejects the authority of Scripture, the necessity of salvation, and the lordship of the Messiah. It is a counterfeit light that centers the self instead of the Kingdom of God.
The Spirit of God is holy, covenantal, Christ exalting, and Word governed. It produces life, obedience, and fruit that only the Holy Spirit can bring forth.
The Nature of Human Spirituality
Human spirituality is often a form of divination, even when disguised as enlightenment or inner peace. It seeks power, meaning, and identity apart from the Word of God. It elevates intuition, emotion, and self discovery above divine revelation.
Paul warned Timothy of this counterfeit spirituality in 2 Timothy 3:5:
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.”
Matthew Henry writes that this describes people who “pretend to religion, but oppose the power of godliness.”
This is spirituality without the Spirit.
Human spirituality leaves out the cross, the blood, the atonement, repentance, and faith. It speaks of energy but not Yeshua. It speaks of awakening but not salvation. It speaks of inner light but not the Ruach Elohim who alone gives life.
It is the same spirit of divination Paul confronted in Acts 16:16, where a girl possessed with a spirit of soothsaying followed Paul. She sounded spiritual, but she was not governed by God.
Spirituality seeks experience.
The Spirit of God seeks obedience.
Spirituality seeks self realization.
The Spirit of God reveals Mashiach, the Anointed One.
Spirituality seeks personal truth.
The Spirit of God reveals Torah, the eternal truth of YHWH.
Spirituality avoids Scripture because Scripture exposes the flesh.
Watchman Nee on the Flesh and False Spirituality
Watchman Nee taught that the flesh loves religious activity without spiritual life. He wrote that the flesh “loves to act independently of God, even in spiritual things.”
This is the essence of human spirituality. It is self powered, self centered, and self glorifying.
Nee emphasized that the Holy Spirit dethrones the flesh. He exposes self rule and establishes the lordship of Adonai in the heart.
False spirituality builds thrones for self.
The Spirit of God tears them down.
The Spirit of God
The Spirit of God is not an energy or a feeling. He is the living Ruach Elohim, the breath of God, who hovered over the waters in Genesis 1:2.
He is the Spirit of truth, not the spirit of intuition.
He is the Spirit of holiness, not the spirit of self discovery.
He is the Spirit of Christ, not the spirit of the age, the spirit of the world (cosmos system), nor the spirit of the universe (cosmos system). Spirituality is primarily focused on the elements and the things that are visible in the world (cosmos system).
John 16:13 says:
“When He, the SPIRIT of TRUTH, is come, He will guide you into all TRUTH.”
Matthew Henry notes that the Spirit “leads the soul to Christ, and forms the heart to obedience.” -- Matthew Henry Concise Commentaries
The Spirit of God is governed by the sovereign will of YHWH, not human desire.
He operates under the covenant, commandments, and laws God established.
He never contradicts Scripture.
He never bypasses the Messiah.
He never glorifies man.
Romans 8:14 says
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
The Spirit leads.
Spirituality wanders.
The Spirit convicts.
Spirituality comforts the flesh.
The Spirit sanctifies.
Spirituality entertains.
The Spirit produces fruit that no human effort can imitate.
Galatians 5:22 lists love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.
The Spirit on the Throne of the Heart
When a person receives Yeshua HaMashiach, the Spirit of God becomes a living fire within them.
He quickens the heart.
He illuminates the mind.
He awakens the soul.
He writes the Word on the inward parts.
Ezekiel 36:27 says
“I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes.”
Matthew Henry explains that this is the Spirit “inclining the will and strengthening the heart to obedience.”
This is not human spirituality.
This is divine transformation.
The Spirit of God sits upon the throne of the heart, ruling with holiness, truth, and fire.
He aligns the believer with the covenant of God, the commandments of God, and the laws God ordained to remain in existence.
He does not lead into vague spirituality.
He leads into righteousness.
He does not lead into self discovery.
He leads into Christ likeness.
He does not lead into emotionalism.
He leads into truth.
These fruits come only from the Holy Spirit, never from human spirituality.

The Messiah at the Center
Any spirituality that leaves out Yeshua HaMashiach, the Anointed One, is deception.
Any spirituality that avoids the cross is darkness.
Any spirituality that rejects the blood is powerless.
Any spirituality that denies the resurrection is dead.
The Spirit of God always reveals Yeshua, always glorifies Mashiach, always exalts Adonai, and always aligns with the Word of Elohim.
John 15:26 says
“The Spirit of truth which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.”
Matthew Henry writes that the Spirit “magnifies Christ and makes him precious to the soul.”
This is the dividing line.
Spirituality magnifies self.
The Spirit of the Most High God magnifies Christ.
Closing Devotional Prayer:
Ruach Elohim, breathe upon my heart.
Deliver me from false spirituality and every imitation of your presence.
Establish your throne within me.
Let your fire burn away self rule.
Lead me into obedience, holiness, and truth.
Reveal Yeshua HaMashiach to me in fullness.
Let your Word govern my thoughts, my desires, and my steps.
Make me a vessel of your covenant and your commandments.
Produce in me the fruit that only you can bring forth.
Amen.
