Still Asking for Mountains: Caleb’s Faith and the Power of God to Fulfill Vision

Many people assume that certain dreams, callings, or promises have an expiration date. Yet the life of Caleb stands as a powerful testimony that God is not limited by human age, physical limitations, or the passing of time. When God gives a vision, He also supplies the strength, grace, and opportunity needed to bring it to completion.

Caleb was forty years old when Moses sent him to spy out the Promised Land. While ten spies focused on obstacles, Caleb focused on God's promise. He saw the same giants, fortified cities, and challenges, but his faith was anchored in the power of God rather than in human weakness. Because of his unwavering trust, God promised him a specific inheritance.

Forty-five years later, that promise had still not faded from Caleb's heart. At eighty-five years old, he stood before Joshua and declared:

"And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years... and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me... Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day."

(Joshua 14:10-12, KJV)

The Hebrew word translated "strength" in verse 11 is connected to Strong's H3581, koach, meaning strength, vigor, power, ability, force, or capacity. Caleb recognized that his ability did not come from natural preservation alone; it came from God's sustaining power. The Lord had preserved his vigor, courage, and faith for the fulfillment of His promise.

What is remarkable is that Caleb did not ask for comfortable territory. He requested the mountain occupied by the Anakim, a people known for their great stature and military strength. Even in his advanced years, Caleb believed God's promise more than he feared the giants. His vision remained alive because his faith remained alive.

The Lord honored that faith. Joshua blessed Caleb, and Hebron became his inheritance. The dream conceived decades earlier was finally possessed because Caleb refused to let go of what God had spoken.

For believers today, Caleb's story carries a life-changing message. As long as God gives us breath, we should never abandon a divine vision. Whether the need is healing, ministry, business development, education, family restoration, creative endeavors, or any purpose inspired by God, we must continue to believe that He is able to bring His promises to pass.

The Apostle Paul echoed this truth when he wrote:

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:" Philippians 1:6 (KJV)

This verse beautifully complements Caleb's testimony. God gave Caleb a promise at age forty, preserved him through forty-five years of waiting, and empowered him at age eighty-five to possess the very mountain God had spoken over his life. Caleb's story demonstrates that when God begins a work, He remains committed to completing it.
